Tom Allenstein, MBA, RN
President and CEO, MedFlight
What made you decide this profession?
I got in the profession because I wanted to help people during their toughest times like when they are sick or injured.
What hobbies do you have or what do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to play golf (which I do poorly) and I enjoy running marathons.
If you could be a superhero who would it be?
Superman because anyone who has run a marathon knows how great it would be if you could complete it in less time than it usually takes you. Also, I can't imagine how long my golf drives would be if I had that power.
What was the first concert you attended?
Three Dog Night at the old Metropolitan Arena in Minneapolis (home to the Minnesota North Stars hockey team).
Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in northern Iowa.
What was your first job?
Growing up in farm country, I did a number of jobs around farms but my first paying job was de-tasseling corn. I think I made $3.00/hour and worked a ten hour day. My first job in healthcare was as a nurse in Idaho Falls, Idaho where I worked in the ICU and the ER.
How long have you been affiliated with COTS and in what capacity?
I began attending the COTS prehospital meetings in 2008 or 2009. In 2015, I took over Dr. Howie Werman's position on the COTS Board and have served ever since.
